GRAMMY AWARD WINNERS IN AFRICA
Every one in this day and age, or perhaps, every lover of music in this age knows what A Grammy is. Well, for those who aren’t sure, A Grammy is the most coveted award any musician could ever covet. There is no monetary attachment, but a Grammy definitely comes with a whole lot of deals, recognition and eventually, money.
Few have been truly lucky….or lest say talented to have been awarded the award overtime. And here is a list of winners and the years they won. Have a fun read!!
LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO
They are a South African male choral group singing in the local vocal style of “isicathamiya” and “mbube”. They became known internationally after singing with Paul Simon on his 1986 album, Graceland.

They are the most decorated artistes from Africa, having won the Grammys five times, with 17 nominations, the most by any African. Members of this group include Thulani Shabalala and his brothers, Sibongiseni, Thamsanqa and Msizi, Abednego Mazibuko, Russel Mthemba amongst others.
WES MADIKO
He was a Cameroonian musician. He won the Grammys in 1996 after signing with Sony Music. He won the award for World Music Award for World’s bestselling African Artist.
ANGELIQUE KIDJO
She is a Benin Republic singer, songwriter and activist. She has won the coveted award five times, in 2008, 2015, 2016, 2020 and 2022 for the “Best Global World Album category.
ALI IBRAHIM “FARKA” TOURE
He was a singer, multi-instrumentalist player and one of the most internationally renowned musicians in Africa, from Mali. He won the Grammys in 1994 and 2005 for Best World Music Album and Best Traditional World Music Album in 2010
YOUSSOU N’DOUR
He is a Senegalese singer, songwriter, composer and politician. He was called described as “Perhaps the most famous singer alive” in Senegal by Rolling Stone Magazine. He won the Grammy award for World Music Album in 2005.
TINARIWEN
They are a music group from Mali consisting of Tuareg musicians from the Sahara Desert region of Northern Mali. They won the Grammys in 2012 for Best World Music Album
RICHARD BONA
He is a Cameroon-born American musician, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. He won the Grammys for Best Contemporary Jazz Album at the 45th edition of the Grammys.
SOWETO GOSPEL CHOIR
They are a South African gospel group formed in Soweto, South Africa by David Mulovhedzi, Beverly Bryer, Andrew Kay, David Figo and Cliff Hocking in 2002. They won the award in 2007 and 2008 for Traditional World Music Album and in 2019 for Global Music Album.
WOUTER KELLERMAN
He is a flautist, composer and producer from South Africa. He won the Grammys in 2016 for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album,
BURNA BOY
Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy is a Nigerian singer songwriter. He won the grammys in 2021 for Best World Music Album with his album, Twice as Tall.
WIZKID
Ayo Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid or Big Wiz is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. He won the Grammys in 2021 for his collaboration with American singer, Beyonce’s Brown Skin Girl. The song won the Best Music Video category.
BLACK COFFEE
Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, better known as Black Coffee is a DJ, record producer and songwriter from South Africa. He won the Grammys for Best Dance/Electronic Album in the just concluded edition.
