Afrobeats artists Tems, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Asake and Tyla nominated at BET Awards 2026

Afrobeats at BET Awards 2026: No Wins, But the Culture Still Showed Up

The 2026 BET Awards took over the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on June 28, and African music had five of its biggest names in the building. Tems, Wizkid, Asake, Burna Boy, and Tyla all earned nominations at one of Black entertainment’s most prestigious stages. However, when the dust settled, none of them walked home with a statue. Furthermore, that is not the full story. In fact, it is barely even half of it.

Here at AfrobeatsGlobal, we always say that presence is power. So let us break down exactly what happened with your favorite African artists at the Afrobeats BET Awards 2026 and why this night means more than the trophy count suggests.

Tems Stole the Night at Afrobeats BET Awards 2026 Without Winning a Single Award

Let us start with the woman who honestly owned the evening. Tems came in with three nominations. She was up for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, the BET Her Award for her song First, and the Viewers’ Choice Award for Raindrop, her collaboration with British rapper Dave. That is a serious nominations haul for any artist on any continent.

She did not win any of them. Kehlani took Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Doechii featuring SZA claimed the BET Her Award, and Mariah the Scientist’s Burning Blue won Viewers’ Choice. In addition, you know what? That is tough. However, what Tems did next is what people are still talking about.

She walked out on that stage in a stunning white gown, backed by a full live band and six backup singers, and delivered a performance of “What You Need” that had the entire room quiet and locked in.

Billboard ranked it among the best performances of the night. BET themselves described it as angelic. Furthermore, Tems was also part of the Lauryn Hill tribute, joining the star-studded celebration on stage alongside Doja Cat, Doechii, Nas, Queen Latifah, and more. That is not a loss. That is a statement.

Wizkid and Asake Brought the Afrobeats BET Awards 2026 Energy as a Duo

Wizkid and Asake

This one was genuinely exciting. Wizkid and Asake received a joint nomination for Best Group at this year’s BET Awards. Think about that for a second. Two of Nigeria’s hottest acts are sitting in the same category as global rap royalty, competing on that level.

They lost to Clipse, the legendary rap duo who had a monster night overall, taking home Album of the Year, Best Group, and Best Collaboration. Clipse, featuring Kendrick Lamar, was genuinely unstoppable on this particular evening. However, the fact that Wizkid and Asake even belong in that conversation is significant.

A few years ago, Afrobeats artists were fighting for space in the Best International Act category. Now they are competing for Best Group against American hip-hop legends. That is not a small shift.

Burna Boy’s Nomination Proves Afrobeats Crossover Power at BET Awards 2026

Burna Boy

The African Giant was nominated for Best Collaboration for his feature on Gunna’s track WGFT. Furthermore, this nomination says so much about where Burna Boy sits in the global music landscape right now. He was not nominated as an African act in an African category. He was in the Best Collaboration category, going up against the likes of Clipse, Kendrick Lamar, Chris Brown, Summer Walker, and Baby Keem.

Clipse featuring Kendrick Lamar took the award with Chains & Whips. However, Burna Boy’s placement in that category is its own kind of recognition. It tells you that American artists are actively seeking out Afrobeats features because they add something unique, something magnetic that their audiences want.

If you need a reminder of what Burna Boy’s BET history looks like, remember that back in 2019, his mother Bose Ogulu collected his Best International Act award on his behalf and delivered one of the most powerful speeches in BET Awards history, telling the world to remember they were Africans before they were anything else. That moment still lives rent-free in the culture, and rightfully so.

Tyla Kept South Africa Flying the Flag at Afrobeats BET Awards 2026

Tyla makes history at 2026 BET Awards.

South African superstar Tyla came through with two nominations. Her video for Chanel earned her a Video of the Year nod, and she was also in the running for Viewers’ Choice. Both went to American artists on the night. Kehlani took Video of the Year for “Folded,” and Mariah the Scientist won Viewers’ Choice.

However, Tyla being in the Video of the Year category alongside some of the biggest names in American R&B is something that deserves respect. Furthermore, her consistent presence at major award shows since her Grammy win tells you that this is not a one-time thing. Tyla is building something long-term on the global stage, and AfrobeatsGlobal will be watching every step of it. What Afrobeats BET Awards 2026 Really Tells Us About the Global Movement

The 2026 BET Awards saw zero African artists walk away with a win. That is the plain truth. However, here is the bigger truth. Five African artists across music and film were nominated in competitive mainstream categories that are not limited to international or African acts.

Tems was in the same category as American R&B’s finest. Wizkid and Asake went up against a legendary rap duo. Burna Boy was on a best collaboration list with Kendrick Lamar. Tyla competed in Video of the Year. Furthermore, British-Nigerian actor Damson Idris was even nominated for Best Actor.

That is the story. Afrobeats is no longer sitting at the kids’ table. The genre has pulled up a seat at the main one, and the competition at that table is fierce.

In addition, consider this. Just last year at the 2025 BET Awards, Ayra Starr was the only Nigerian artist to win, taking home Best International Act. The category did not even exist at this year’s ceremony in the same format. African artists are now integrated into general categories, which is both a sign of progress and a sign of how much harder the competition has become.
