Ayra Starr Makes NPR Tiny Desk Debut With Unreleased Tornado

Ayra Starr just walked behind the most iconic desk in music and gave us something we were not ready for. She made her NPR Tiny Desk debut and previewed an unreleased track from her upcoming album. AfrobeatsGlobal was watching closely.

Ayra Starr NPR Tiny Desk: Five Songs, One Standout Moment

The performance dropped on NPR Music’s YouTube channel as part of Tiny Desk’s 2026 Black Music Month series. Notably, this year’s lineup honors the legacy of BET across a multi-generational selection of artists.

However, what made this session unmissable was the setlist. Ayra Starr moved through Gimme Dat and Who’s Dat Girl before dropping Tornado, an unreleased track from her forthcoming album Starrgirl. Furthermore, she stripped back her usual fashion-forward aesthetic, showing up in a simple black sweatsuit to let her vocals lead. Ayra Starr performed Gimme Dat, Who’s Dat Girl, Tornado (unreleased), Amin, and Orun at the NPR Tiny Desk 2026.

In addition, the closing two songs, Amin and Orun, showed a more reflective, faith-rooted side of the artist. As a result, the full five-song set gave audiences a wider portrait of Ayra Starr than her radio hits alone could offer.

What to Expect From Starrgirl

Starrgirl is Ayra Starr‘s third studio album, set for release on August 14, 2026, via Mavin Records. Meanwhile, the album has been building steady heat with singles including Gimme Dat featuring Wizkid, Who’s Dat Girl with Rema, and Where Do We Go from March 2026.

Interestingly, the Tiny Desk performance effectively served as the live debut of Tornado ahead of its official release this Friday. AfrobeatsGlobal has been tracking this rollout, and the album excitement is very real right now.

Starrgirl drops August 14, 2026. Mark the date. This is shaping up to be one of the biggest Afrobeats releases of the year. Check out our related blog post on this: Ayra Starr Pushes Starr Girl Album Release to August 14.

Following Afrobeats Legends to the Tiny Desk

On the other hand, Ayra Starr is not the first Nigerian artist to grace this platform. Burna Boy, Tems, and Asake have all preceded her. Even so, each performance adds something unique.

Notably, Tems appeared twice, using her second performance to preview her debut album Born in the Wild. Ayra Starr‘s decision to debut Tornado follows a similar logic: use the Tiny Desk as a launchpad for something bigger. Therefore, this session is more than a performance. It is a statement of intent. She has wanted this Tiny Desk moment since she was 14, the wait was clearly worth it. Tornado sounds like a hit.
