Headies Awards' 18th edition moving to Toronto, Canada, in 2026

Headies Awards 18th Edition Heads To Toronto

Headies Awards 18th Edition Takes Afrobeats To Canada

The Headies just went international. Nigeria’s biggest music night is leaving Lagos for Toronto, and the culture is going global with it. The Headies Awards 18th edition Toronto announcement landed on June 15, 2026. Organizers made the reveal at a formal event held at the Grand Ballroom of Eko Hotel in Lagos. AfrobeatsGlobal watched the moment unfold in real time; Nigeria’s premier music award platform is heading to Canada for the first time ever.

Founder and CEO Ayo Animashaun confirmed the move himself. He pointed to the strong presence of Nigerians in Canada as a key factor in the decision. Additionally, the growing influence of Afrobeats across international markets made Toronto the right destination. The ceremony will be staged in partnership with international collaborators, including representatives linked to the Academy Awards and the Canadian Embassy.

This move also lands during a milestone year for the brand. The Headies is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2026, having launched as the Hip Hop World Awards in Lagos back in 2006. Furthermore, Animashaun described the two decades as a period of resilience and commitment to Nigerian music excellence.

Why The Headies Awards Toronto Move Matters

Canada’s Deputy High Commissioner, Carlos Rojas-Alburu, welcomed the collaboration warmly. He noted that Canada’s large Nigerian diaspora community made the partnership feel natural. Meanwhile, the event is expected to help connect Nigerian creatives with broader international audiences in North America.

Travel company Wakanow also joined the partnership to support logistics. Their CEO Adebayo Adedeji confirmed the company would assist attendees with flights, accommodation, and curated Toronto experiences. As a result, fans planning to attend have a smoother path to making the trip.

AfrobeatsGlobal sees this as part of a clear pattern across the industry. Afrobeats keeps outgrowing its borders, and its institutions are following. This is what going global actually looks like.
