Davido Hints at Stepping Away From Music Before Turning 40

Davido has sparked conversations about his future in music after revealing that he does not see himself still competing for the spotlight with artists in their 20s when he turns 40.

The 33-year-old Afrobeats superstar made the comments during a recent conversation, suggesting that he could eventually step away from the center of the music industry. Reports on August 20, 2026, described his remarks as a possible retirement hint.

Davido’s comments do not mean he is retiring immediately. Instead, he appears to be thinking about when and how he wants to leave the competitive side of the industry.

Davido Has Previously Spoken About Walking Away

“Music is my blood, but I won’t be 40 years old and still dragging with guys in their 20s. Jay-Z took a break, and he is doing his thing,” he said.

“I can take a 10-year break and still do a 50-arena tour. I have the catalogue. I might decide not to make another song for the rest of my life, and nobody is touching my catalogue,” the singer stated.

“All I am saying is there are other things music should be able to help you branch out into,” Davido added.

This is not the first time Davido has discussed the possibility of stepping away from music. In July, he identified not knowing when to walk away from music as one of his biggest fears. He also spoke about the challenges artists can face when they are no longer at the center of public attention.

Earlier this year, Davido also discussed plans to eventually regain control of his music masters before retiring, showing that his thoughts about life after music extend beyond performing. At the same time, the singer has made it clear that he still loves music.

In a recent interview with The FADER, Davido said that if money had been his only motivation, he would have retired years ago. He explained that his passion for music remains a major reason he continues to record and perform.

Is Davido Still Active in Music?

Despite discussing his eventual exit, Davido remains firmly active in music. He released his sixth studio album, Oriadé, on July 31, 2026, and has continued working with both established and emerging artists. He has also spoken positively about the growth of Afrobeats, saying “the sky is big enough” for African artists to succeed together.

For now, therefore, Davido’s comments appear to be more about planning for the future than announcing an immediate retirement. At 33, the singer still has years ahead of him, but he is already thinking about what life after the spotlight could look like.
