How Police Chief Prevented Joint Booking of Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale for Ghana DJ Awards

Reports reveal that the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, played a role in preventing both of Ghana’s dancehall stars, Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy, from sharing the stage at the recent Ghana DJ’s Awards.

During the 11th edition of the Guinness Ghana DJ Awards on November 25, 2023, only Shatta Wale performed as the main act.

Despite both artists being advertised, insider accounts suggest that the decision to have only one headline was influenced by the Ghana Police Service, as confirmed by Shatta Wale’s manager, Sammy Baah ‘Flex’.

After the event, Sammy Baah ‘Flex’ recounted a conversation with Mercury Quaye, the CEO of Ghana DJ Awards, expressing concerns about the situation.

According to him, Mercury Quaye revealed that it was a directive from higher-ups in the Ghana Police Service.

The authorities insisted that approval was needed before featuring both Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale in a show due to security concerns.

Consequently, the organizers were given the option to choose only one of the two artists.

Sammy Baah’s account suggests that Mercury Quaye faced police threats of arrest if he booked both acts without official approval.

Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy have a history of conflicts, some resulting in chaos. Recently, they made headlines for booking the Accra Sports Stadium simultaneously for December events.

Shatta Wale eventually canceled his event, citing logistical challenges with setting up within a tight timeframe. Sammy Flex expressed worry over the police’s decision, emphasizing potential economic losses for both artists.
