How Olamide Left Me To Create His Own Record Label, YBNL – ID Cabasa Reveals

Veteran record producer and music executive Olumide Ogunade, better known as ID Cabasa, recently opened up about the departure of his former signee, Olamide, from his record company, Coded Tunes.

Speaking on the “Afrobeats Podcast,” Cabasa revealed the emotional moments leading up to Olamide’s decision to leave.Cabasa, who discovered Olamide when he was just 13 years old, recounted their first meeting. “Olamide came to my studio with a friend who wanted to feature him on a song,” he said. “His friend was not good musically. Olamide was quiet and unassuming. I gave him a beat, and he did 16 bars that changed everything.

Olamide became more like a son to me.”The bond between Cabasa and Olamide made the latter’s departure particularly painful. “When he was about to leave my record label, we sat down to discuss it. It wasn’t the pain of not wanting him to progress; it was the pain of seeing someone you love leave. I cried,” Cabasa admitted. “I said, ‘Olamide, you should’ve waited o!’ He said, ‘Bros, I want to do something, and I’m sure, by your code, we might not be able to do some of them.’ We didn’t have a fight. I gave him my full blessings.

Olamide left Coded Tunes in 2012 to establish his own record label, YBNL Nation, a move that has since proven to be highly successful. Despite the initial heartbreak, Cabasa’s support for Olamide remains unwavering, underscoring the deep, enduring bond between the mentor and his protégé.
