Davido Headlines Afro Plus Fest Opening Night

Davido opened Afro Plus Fest with a bang, and Landover, Maryland, has not stopped talking about it. The Davido Afro Plus Fest set kicked off the festival’s Labor Day weekend run on September 4. Additionally, the Nigerian superstar headlined the opening night at Northwest Stadium in front of a massive crowd.

AfrobeatsGlobal has covered Afro Plus Fest news since its debut, and this year’s expansion changed everything. The festival grew from a sold-out one-day event into a full three-day celebration. However, this year’s lineup added Alkaline and Wizkid as additional headliners for Saturday and Sunday. Furthermore, organizers expect up to 120,000 fans across the full weekend.

Backstage moments stole almost as much attention as the performance itself. South Korean content creator Silly Music screamed with excitement meeting Davido and Adekunle Gold. Meanwhile, rapper Lil Baby shared a warm handshake with the Afrobeats icon. Notably, creator Enzo greeted Davido with a full prostration, a gesture of deep respect in Nigerian culture.

These fan star moments captured exactly what Afro Plus Fest represents for the diaspora. The festival blends Afrobeats, hip hop, dancehall, amapiano, and soca across two massive stages. As a result, the event has become a true cultural hub for Black music fans in the DMV region.

Afro Plus Fest 2026 Keeps the Momentum Going

Maryland Governor Wes Moore publicly backed the festival, calling it a homecoming for African communities. In fact, he specifically urged attendees to support the Made in DMV stage featuring local performers. Still, the international headliners remain the biggest draw for most fans traveling in.

Even so, the weekend is far from over. Alkaline headlines Saturday, while Wizkid closes things out on Sunday. On the other hand, Friday’s Davido set already set a high bar for the rest of the festival.
