Burna Boy in a tailored suit on the Ballon d’Or stage? Yes, fans, it really happened. The Burna Boy Socrates Award moment is now the biggest crossover story of the week. AfrobeatsGlobal brings you everything that went down in London.
Burna Boy Socrates Award Moment at the 2026 Ballon d’Or
The ceremony took place on Monday, 26 October 2026, at the Palladium Theatre in London. Burna Boy swapped his usual stagewear for a tailored black suit with subtle metallic touches. Furthermore, he added dark sunglasses to complete the look. Bukayo Saka stood beside him in a classic black tuxedo and bow tie.
Then came the speech. Before handing over the trophy, Burna Boy spoke about the football academy he started back home. According to him, it began a few years ago to support football culture in Nigeria. Moreover, he hopes to return one day and see “one of my people” collect a Ballon d’Or award.
Afterwards, he shared a warm hug with Saka and stepped aside so the footballer could enjoy the moment. In addition, fans online loved seeing two Nigerian stars from different worlds share one stage.
Why Saka Earned the Burna Boy Socrates Award
The Socrates Award honors footballers who use their influence for humanitarian causes. It was introduced in 2022 by France Football in partnership with Peace and Sport. Notably, Sadio Mane won the first edition for his charity work in Senegal. A year later, Jenni Hermoso became the first woman to receive it.
So why Saka? Well, the Arsenal and England star works with the charity BigShoe. The charity provides medical care and humanitarian aid for children and families in need. Through that partnership, Saka has helped fund 120 life-changing operations for children in Kano, Nigeria. Those cases include brain hernias and umbilical hernias.
Consequently, the Burna Boy Socrates Award presentation carried extra meaning for Nigerian fans. After all, the winner and the presenter both have strong Nigerian roots.
On stage, Saka also read a letter from a 14-year-old boy in Rwanda named Biringiro. The boy started losing his sight at 12, and his village has no electricity. However, after eye care through BigShoe, he can now read the blackboard from the back of the classroom. Saka then said he accepted the honor on behalf of every child the charity has helped.
Later, Saka posted on Instagram about the recognition. He said he is grateful and proud of what he and the team are building.
