A five-time Grammy winner just wrote a new chapter in African music history.
Five-time Grammy winner Angélique Kidjo has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, becoming the first African musician and first Black African artist to be recognized on the famed boulevard.

Born in Benin, Kidjo has built an international career spanning more than 40 years and was once dubbed “Africa’s premier diva” by Time magazine.
“Angelique Kidjo’s extraordinary artistry and global influence have inspired audiences across generations and continents,” said Hollywood Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez in a news release announcing the honor.

The 66-year-old musician was accompanied by Oscar-nominated actor Willem Dafoe and record producer Harvey Mason Jr. at the ceremony.
“I may be the first African female singer to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but I am convinced that I will not be the last,” Kidjo said when the honor was first announced. “Many others will follow, and that fills my heart with joy.”
Kidjo’s induction adds to a legacy already built on five Grammy wins and decades of boundary-pushing work that has fused West African rhythms with jazz, funk, and global pop influences. Her influence stretches well beyond her own catalogue, having shaped and inspired a generation of African artists now finding global crossover success of their own.
The honor places her name permanently alongside music and film legends on one of the world’s most recognizable cultural landmarks, marking a milestone moment not just for Kidjo but for African music as a whole.
